If we help people quantify wellness with a simple overall score, they will feel empowered to make meaningful progress instead of getting distracted by generic advice.

With a team of two, our challenge was to do bootstrap a mobile app that integrates HealthKit to consolidate data and quantify vitality.

We had to not only create a simple user experience, but invent algorithms to assess biometrics and evaluate overall health.

One challenge we faced was quantifying health in a way that was meaningful to people. The easy approach would be to categorize metrics physiologically, but vitality is about feeling exceptional, not just having biomarkers in range.

So, instead, we mapped health indicators to the health enthusiast mental model. This way, people can feel inspired and motivated to make progress, knowing how improving a metric will influence their daily life.

Vitality is all about radiating positive youthful energy. We wanted to reflect this while remaining tech-centric with our brand. We designed a custom grapefruit brand color and used neutral grays for a professional modern feel. We also incorporate pixel art to add playfulness and stand out.

Rapid prototyping is essential to getting feedback early and iterating quickly. So, we created a design system and prototyped every page of our mobile app in Figma, which allowed us to give users a hands-on experience with our app before writing any code.

It's hard to understate the importance of maintaining a design system. You can't expect every developer to care about pixel perfection when it comes to building UIs. Beauty is just one aspect of design, yet it has an underappreciated influence on customer expectations. As a design engineer, my advantage is knowing both how to create design systems with design software and how to implement themes in TypeScript frameworks.
